The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

She may be a tough-as-nails, street-smart private investigator, but when total tomboy Molly (Miley Cyrus) is drafted by the FBI to go undercover within a college sorority, she finds that she is way out of her class among a sisterhood of snooty, high maintenance, materialistic college girls.

However, Molly accepts the pledge to protect one of the society debs, who holds key information that will be used at a trial where her father is about to turn State’s evidence and testify against the mob. Despite being the opposite of her new “sisters,” Molly has to suck it up and bond with obnoxious upper crust trust fund babies if she’s going to succeed in her top-secret mission, in Millennium Entertainment’s action/comedy, ‘So Undercover’.

The story originated from a sharply etched, highly original screenplay written by Steven Pearl and Allan Loeb, which, when they first began the project, was based on a story idea by Mr. Loeb, and had a male protagonist. As Mr. Pearl recalls, “We actually wrote this seven years ago. At one point we thought, why don’t we take the idea and flip it on its head and put a female in the lead.”

Bingo! The screenplay was well received, and over the years a number of actresses were attached to the project. However, although the much sought-after writing team had a number of chances to sell the script, they were committed to finding just the right equation of cast and studio so that they could make the movie the way they envisioned it.

The long-awaited combination began to click when director Tom Vaughan read the screenplay and, as he says, found it “Really fun and smart. As I read it, I just thought of Miley Cyrus for the dual roles of Molly Morris and Brook Stonebridge,” the director adds. “I’ve known Miley’s work for years, and I always thought she was very funny, very charming, and had a lot to offer the movies. I knew she would be perfect and would add heart to the film.”

Screen superstar Miley Cyrus recalls how enthusiastic she was when she first received the script. “Allan Loeb and Steven Pearl are amazing and they’ve done so many terrific films,” the popular actress says. “I was really looking forward to working with them, and once I read their screenplay, I saw how fun it would be to portray a character where I got to play a dual role again. I also knew it would be something that all audiences would enjoy watching.”

In ‘So Undercover’, Miley’s tough character Molly has to infiltrate a sorority. However, she’s been raised by her single father and hasn’t grown up with other girls, so she’s thrust into a completely foreign and feminine world. As everyone knows, Cyrus has vast experience transforming herself from one persona to another all within the same story. “On my TV show, I went from Miley, a nice normal girl, to Hannah Montana who was a superstar,” the actress says. “I really like playing characters who contradict each other. So this was an especially fun role for me. I think Molly is more like me than my undercover character Brook. But it was fun to bring in the feminine qualities that I definitely have too.”

Director Tom Vaughan says that his instincts about Miley Cyrus’s talents were spot on. “When you watch Miley work you get a great sense that she’s a lot of fun, and very professional. She has natural talent for comedy. She’s a born comedienne, and she brings great energy to her characters,” he says. “I knew this was going to be her first role as an adult—she just turned 18 before we started filming—and it’s been fun watching her mature through the years.”
