The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

In his addition to Venice Noir entitled ‘The Comedy is Over,’ Francesco Ferracin delivers a punch to anyone who believes they are upholding ideals by being part of a particular political party. He shows how only one experience can change a person’s views, even if they have upheld them for their entire lives.

Despite being raised in a strictly conservative family, the narrator holds Leftist beliefs: a mix of races, religions, and political affiliations is key to Venice’s concept of freedom. When she becomes a victim in a horrifying crime that takes the life of her friend and nearly her own, she changes her convictions dramatically. She starts to see the anger in the eyes of her friends’ and the unspoken guilt they push upon her. Why was she the one to survive? Why did the pretty one have to die?

Unfortunately, the attack is forever in her mind and serves as a sort of ulterior motive to all of her relationships, whether romantic, familial, or professional. Aside from a very brief stint of survivor’s guilt, the narrator tosses her friends aside and goes for a guy who brings subconscious emotions out that she has never known.

Not only has she changed in her dealings with those close to her, but the way she thinks has also taken a sudden change. A pair of young men from Morocco had been the criminals in the attack. Now, more than ever, race is brought to the fore of everyone she sees. No longer does she see the variety of color of the faces of passersby as worthy of her support.

Ferracin gives readers a narrator that shows the condition of circular obliviousness that smothers Venice. Very few instances in the narration give readers a chance to pity the woman who has been through a crime where her friends would rather have seen her die than the other woman. The plot shows a world where the law system is not enough to sufficiently avenge its citizens and where everyone goes about their lives doing the same things, each leading to a violent end.

The narrator is the exception to the vicious cycle. Instead of giving in to the hand of her attackers, she survives and vows revenge in a place where superheroes never appear to a damsel in distress, no matter how pretty they are. There is no one to avenge those who have been wronged except for the victim.

Through an unsympathetic narrator who is driven by her need for revenge, Ferracin makes readers feel the same lack of sympathy for Venice’s limbo-like state. He shows that individuals need to observe and stop blindly accepting the beliefs of a particular political party. He makes readers question the plausibility of enduring beliefs when faced with a situation that hurls the consequences of those beliefs in the face of the holder.

Music is a stimulus that acts on the physical and corporal equilibrium. Is it possible to use certain music to decrease stress in order to favor concentration, imagination and also play as a stimulant role in the right hemisphere? Music takes you to another mind state, it could also remind you of your childhood, feelings or things that you have sometimes lived.

That is why it is completely unavoidable not to remember music themes of your favorites TV shows.

Here at Toonari Post we want to introduce you the 10 songs that became famous from being featuring in TV.

Stick around and share your thoughts!

Who wouldn’t remember Ross, Chandler, Phoebe, Monica, Rachel and Joey? And who wouldn’t remember the main music theme of “Friends”?
That’s why The Rembrandts with their song are the one on the top 10 list.
[Youtube link: Friends music theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9Nc0FAk74c]

This guitar sound takes us to Sacred Heart Hospital, with Dr. Jonathan Michael “J.D.” Dorian, Dr. Chris Turk and Elliot Reid in “Scrubs”.
Lazlo Bane is responsible for this beautiful theme, “Superman”. Don’t miss it.
[Youtube link: Superman - Lazlo Bane http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMV8L8Jl-cw]

Vampire geeks would definitely recognize this Jace Everett theme: Bad Things. This is the main theme of “True Blood”, one incredible and successful HBO series that takes place in one little Luisiana town.
[Youtube link: Jace Everett - Bad Things http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxINMuOgAu8&feature=related]

HBO and “How To Make It in America” is the next one. Aloe Blacc composed “I Need A Dollar” for the opening sequence. This rapper, singer and producer created a track that fits perfectly with the show.
[Youtube link: I need a dollar - Aloe Blacc http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_9aaotk3PU ]

Going back to the 90′s, what do you think when you imagine a “typical” Texan family? Would Hank, Peggy and Bobby came to your mind? If it does, you would be familiarized with “Yahoos and Triangles” of The Refreshments.
[Youtube link: Yahoo and triangles - The Refreshments http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbnzBO6odgw]

In 2009, NCB started broadcasting “Community”, a series of college students in Denver, Colorado. The 88 made several songs that have appeared in numerous TV shows. In this case, “At least it was here” is one of theme.
[Youtube link: At least it was here - the 88 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qEGbjR1Y9Qo]

Tom Waits. That’s the name of this songwriter who created “Way Down in the Hole” for The Wire, another HBO’s success. Drug dealing is the main topic in it, giving a realistic point of view of Baltimore’s lifestyle. A fact made clear once you remember the opening sequence of the piece.
[Youtube link: Way down in the hole - Tom Waits http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E1ABR4UpDSU]

“Superhero”, is a good theme name for Entourage. This series tells of young Vince’s life as an actor in Hollywood and his friends in the city. ”Jane’s Addiction” features their third album “Strays” which includes this theme that is well recognized in the opening sequence.
[Youtube link: Superhero - Jane's Addiction http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BQ0sV4s-jzA]

Let’s take a look to 1966.

NBC broadcasted The Monkees, an American sitcom that follows the adventures of four young men trying to make a name for themselves as rock ‘n roll singers. Written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Heart, this song takes the TV show’s name and becomes the main theme of it. Take a look if you don’t already know it.
[Youtube link: The Monkees - The Monkees http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWea5rB7XlY ]

If we came back to our decade, we cannot leave behind this American television comedy created by Jenji Kohan: Weeds. ”Little boxes” is the theme that deserves a special recognition in our list. This theme, written by Malvina Reynolds was used in season one. In season two and three, several artists such as Elvis Costello, Linkin Park among others made covers for each episode of the show. We show you the original theme.
[Youtube link: Little boxes - Malvina Reynolds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7Ys9RkvxgI ]

This is just a sample of how music can impact an audience and even pass into television history pages.

Do you agree with this top 10 list? We are pleased to know of what other theme you would add to the list.

Don’t be shy!

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Green Lantern is part of the DC Comic world coming to the big screen. The movie follows Hal Jordan, a human who is chosen by a ring of infinite power to save Earth, from Parallax, a parasite attacking Earth. Hal Jordan, a test pilot, is called forth to protect Earth by joining the Green Lantern Corps. —an intergalactic embassy that harnesses green energy through rings to protect the universe.

To those who have read the comics, there have been some changes in the transition from comic to movie. The movie seems like it will follow the later series, as having Hal Jordan fight off the Parallax. Hector Hammond is also in the movie and will have run-ins with not only Hal but with the fear monger, Parallax. It seems like the movie will incorporate different areas and villains of Green Lantern from all different eras of the Comic, but will ultimately focus on the origins of Hal Jordan.

Directing the movie is the well-known action director Martin Campbell who created such titles like: 007 Goldeneye, Casino Royale, and The Mask of Zorro. Having done these movies, it feels like he will be right at home with the action sequences of Green Lantern. Nevertheless, it seems like Martin Campbell didn’t know the story of Green Lantern that well before he was put on the project, so the movie might not necessarily follow the story line of the comics religiously. However, they did have Ozzy Iguanzo, a comic book expert, so they could set the record straight on some details. Mister Campbell had stated in The Telegraph that, “It was an extraordinary learning curve, conceptualizing the characters, going to another planet, deciding what the planet looks like and keeping a sort of reality, if you can call it that.” However, despite the difficulties and differences from the comics, the producer/writer of Green Lantern is none other than Greg Berlanti, whom has worked on Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, an animated movie based around Hal Jordan, Kilowog and other Green Lanterns.

The cast has its fair share of stars like Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan/ Green Lantern. Martin had picked Reynolds based upon his physical acting in “Buried”, and has been quoted saying in his production notes that, “he also physically looks the part, is charming, funny, and has a great sense of decency.“ Ryan Reynolds isn’t the only star in the movie. Blake Lively (The Town) is taking on the role opposite of Reynolds as Carol Ferris, a fellow test pilot and lifelong friend of Hal Jordan. Lively has this to say in the production notes about Green Lantern, ”… I love that the movie also has a great sense of fun and a hint of romance about it.” Voices of Geoffrey Rush (King’s Speech) and Micheal Clarke Duncan (Green Mile) are used for Tomar-Re and Kilowog respectively. Tim Robbins (Shawshank Redemption) also makes an appearance as Hector Hammond’s pushy father.

One thing that will make or break this movie is the special effects. Spending about 50,000,000 dollars on them alone they should be pretty impressive. Why spend so much? Not only is making Parallax, Tomar-Re, and Kilowog entirely in CGI a task in itself, but trying to make an entire alien planet in less than a year is a daunting task. Oa, the Green Lantern Corps. planet is all CGI, so creating an entire planet that looks realistic and pleasing to look at will take some serious skill. What also is all CGI is the famous Green Lantern suit. To do this, Reynolds is wearing a motion tracking suit. Kind of like a leotard but soupped-up with motion tracking modules so that the artists can paste Green Lantern’s suit on Ryan Reynolds’s body. For such a daunting task there is good news. People like Karen Goulekas (Spiderman) and John DesJardin (Watchmen) are both overseers of the effects teams, and to top it all off Grant Major who worked on The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King will be the production designer. Green Lantern may have a lot of daunting effects in over 1,300 of their shots, but they have chosen the right people in order to get the effects done well.
