The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Whiting, U.S.A. — As the classic holiday song goes, “It’s the most wonderful time of the year…” Or is it? A new survey reveals that some aspects of the holiday season can be irk-inducing.

The survey, conducted by coupon site CouponCabin.com, reveals people’s biggest holiday pet peeves, with traffic congestion and crowding topping the list. This survey was conducted online nationwide by Harris Interactive on behalf of CouponCabin.com from November 30 – December 4, 2012, among 2,691 U.S. adults aged 18 and older.

While traffic congestion and crowding are the top holiday pet peeves for 52 percent of U.S. adults, a variety of other holiday happenings made the list:

How early the holiday decorations, sales and store displays start – 46 percent

All anyone thinks about is gifts, not the spirit of the holidays – 42 percent

People who cut in line – 35 percent

Travel prices being too high – 28 percent

Too much holiday music on radio stations or in stores – 23 percent

Pressure to give gifts to more people than I really want to – 22 percent

When people leave their Christmas tree/lights up until late winter (February or March) – 16 percent

People who double dip at holiday parties – 12 percent

Stores that don’t give out boxes – 10 percent

Family members or friends who don’t bring anything when I’m hosting a party – 6 percent

Other – 6 percent

While the holiday season’s pressures can frazzle many people, others stay festive no matter what. The majority (89 percent) report they have holiday pet peeves, but more than one-in-ten (11 percent) said they don’t have any.

“The holidays are typically the busiest time of year for many people, leaving them prone to burnout and frustration,” said Jackie Warrick, President at CouponCabin.com. “Make sure to carve out time in your day to take care of your own needs, as well as reflect on what the true meaning of the holidays are to you.”

Whether it’s a pet peeve or a frustration, when asked what is their least favorite part of the holiday season, a random sampling of U.S. adults surveyed said the following:

Thanksgiving being forgotten.

Added pressure at work to cram everything in and get everything done before the end of the year, right when you want to relax and focus on the season.

Burnout! By the time Christmas is here I’m ready for it to be over.

Taking down the Christmas tree and putting away all the decorations.

Annoying TV commercials, like the one with the car wrapped in a giant bow as a gift.

Everyone feels the need to be artificially friendly.

Hangovers.

So many parties and demands on my time then in January, things are dead.

Spending money on gifts that should really be used for bills or savings.

The frenzy to purchase the latest electronic gadget.

Weight gain caused by the vast amounts of food and snacks that we buy, make or are surrounded by.

Having to go to office parties.

Using my credit card when I prefer to pay cash for items and usually charge some gifts during this time.

All the same songs are overplayed.

The political debates my family gets into after we’ve all had too much eggnog.

Putting the lights on my house.

Realizing how fast another year went by and that my children have gotten old enough that the Christmas “magic” is no longer there.

Saying goodbye to friends and relatives.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Retailers have threatening to make Thanksgiving a shopping holiday with earlier start times for their Black Friday sales this year. Shoppers are resisting and more than ever will be going online to do their Black Friday shopping. GottaDeal.com, having covered Black Friday online since 2003, offers tips to their visitors for getting the most deals when shopping online this week.

“More Black Friday deals than ever will be available online this year, even the most popular doorbuster specials,” says Brad Olson, Owner of GottaDeal.com. “We’re telling our visitors that if they don’t want to shop in stores all night long, they can get the exact same deals from the comfort of their home.”

GottaDeal.com acquires leaked copies of Black Friday ads from major retailers. “The extra time allows our visitors to research products, compare prices, and come up with a plan of attack for the big day, whether they are shopping online or in stores,” says Mr. Olson.

The site offers a comprehensive “Online Black Friday Tracker” which provides a schedule of when the online Black Friday sales start for each retailer, as well as a listing of sale items that can be ordered online at any given moment. In addition to this tracker, the site features a dedicated online Black Friday message board where visitors can discuss the sales, ask questions of the experts on the site and post what deals they are finding.

In addition to using the tools available on the site, GottaDeal.com offers additional tips:

“Prepare your online retailer accounts – Go to each website for stores you plan to shop at this week and make sure your shipping and billing addresses are up to date. Also make sure your credit card information is saved to your account.”

“Be aware of free shipping offers – One of the best parts of online Black Friday shopping is getting your items shipped for free. Each retailer has a different shipping policy – some, such as Best Buy, offer free shipping on absolutely everything. For other stores, there is usually an order total threshold that you must reach to get free shipping.”

GottaDeal.com is a year-round online deals site dedicated to saving visitors money. It features hundreds of online deals posted each week, an updated listing of online coupons and a large community message board. Every autumn, the site opens their Black Friday website dedicated to covering Black Friday sales and holiday shopping trends.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

While a traditional Thanksgiving feast often includes turkey and many side dishes such as stuffing, cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, and green bean casserole, Thanksgiving desserts are also a crowd favorite. Pumpkin pie is a classic dessert that Americans all around the country enjoy during the holiday season. For this Thanksgiving, try out a traditional recipe for a time-honored dish, or get inventive with some creative twists on pumpkin pie.

Traditional Pumpkin Pie

Ingredients

1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened

2 cups canned pumpkin, mashed

1 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 egg plus 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten

1 cup half-and-half

1/4 cup (1/2 stick) melted butter

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, optional

1 piece pre-made pie dough

Whipped cream, for topping

Directions

Set the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Using a standard 9 inch pie pan, take a sheet of already made pie dough and smooth it into the pan. Make sure the edges of the pie dough are smoothed down. Allow the pie shell to cool in the freezer for one hour until it is hard. After it is nice and firm, take out the pie dough from the freezer and cover the inside with a sheet of foil. It is important to fill the inside of the pie shell with dried beans or weights when baking it in the oven so that the dough will not rise. Place the pie shell in the oven for 10 minutes. Remove from the oven and take off the dried beans and aluminum foil. Place the pie shell back in the oven and bake for another 10 minutes.

In order to make the filling, place the cream cheese in a bowl and mix with an electric mixer. Add the pumpkin and mix together. Continue to mix while adding the salt and sugar. Add the butter, half and half, and eggs with the yolks. Continue to mix ingredients while adding the ginger, cinnamon, and vanilla. Mix until all ingredients are combined well.

Finally, pour the pumpkin pie filling into the pie crust. Bake for 50 minutes. Make sure the pie is cool before serving. Top with whipped cream and enjoy!

The total time for preparing and baking this recipe is 1 hour and 35 minutes. This pumpkin pie serves 6-8.

Recipe courtesy of Paula Deen from the Food Network.

Another fun way to use the flavors of pumpkin is to make Whoopie Pumpkin Pies. These miniature desserts are a great way to get small bites of pumpkin pie filling while enjoying a moist and rich outer cookie texture.

Whoopie Pumpkin Pie

Ingredients

For the cookies:

1 stick unsalted butter, at room temperature

1 1/4 cups granulated sugar

1 large egg

1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

Pinch of kosher salt

For the filling:

4 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature

4 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature

2/3 cup confectioners’ sugar

1/4 cup canned pure pumpkin

1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Pinch of kosher salt

Directions

To make the cookies, first preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Place sheets of parchment paper over the baking sheets.

Mix together the granulated sugar and butter with an electric mixer until the ingredients are well blended and fluffy. Add in one egg. Continue to mix the ingredients while adding vanilla and buttermilk.

In a separate bowl, blend together the dry ingredients. Mix together the baking powder, salt, flour, baking soda, and cocoa powder. Add these ingredients to the wet ingredients slowly and continue to mix until well incorporated.

With a tablespoon, drop 8 scoops onto the baking sheet. Bake for 8 minutes, until the edges of the cookies are set. Take the cookies out of the oven and allow them to cool.

The next step is to make the pumpkin filling. With an electric mixer, blend together the cream cheese and butter. Add in the confectioners’ sugar. Continue to blend while adding the salt, cinnamon, and the pumpkin. Mix until all ingredients are smooth.

Take a dollop of the pumpkin filling and spread on the flat part of the cookie. Place another cookie together and form a sandwich. Assemble all and enjoy these delicious whoopie pumpkin pies!

This recipe takes 55 minutes to make, which includes the preparation and baking time. It makes 12 whoopie pies.

Recipe courtesy of The Neely’s from the Food Network.

Cocktails don’t fall short of the seasonal pumpkin flavor either. For an interesting way to incorporate the tastes of Thanksgiving into a beverage, try this creative drink.

Pumpkin Pie Martini

Ingredients

1/2 cup brown sugar

2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice, divided

2 tablespoons granulated sugar

2 cups half-and-half

2 tablespoons pumpkin puree

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Ice cubes

4 ounces vanilla vodka

1 liter sparkling water

Directions

To begin, mix the brown sugar, 1/2 cup water, and pumpkin pie spice over medium heat in a saucepan. Continue to mix the ingredients until the sugar breaks down. Allow the ingredients to come to a boil. Take the saucepan off the heat and let it cool for 30 minutes.

Blend together the vanilla, half of the simple syrup, pumpkin puree, and half and half. Make sure these ingredients are mixed well. After reaching the right blend, fill a pitcher with ice and pour this mixture in. Add vodka and stir.

Next, use a plate to combine 1 teaspoon of the pumpkin pie spice and sugar. Use 2 tablespoons of simple syrup to dip the round rims of the martini glass in. Then dip into the spiced sugar. This creates a decorative garnish for festive martini glasses.

Pour the drink into the glasses and add a splash of sparkling water on top.

This recipe takes 45 minutes to make and serves 4.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport is projecting a slight increase of about one percent in passengers for the 2011 Thanksgiving holiday travel period over last year. DFW anticipates that approximately 1.83 million passengers will travel through the Airport for the 13-day holiday travel period, which runs from November 17 through 29.

The busiest air travel days for the Thanksgiving travel period are the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday after Thanksgiving (November 27, 28 and 29), and the Friday before the holiday (November 18). Each of those days are projected to show more than 165,000 travelers flow through the Airport.

“At DFW we have a lot to be thankful for, in that we have just completed perhaps our best year ever for adding new air service,” said Jeff Fegan, CEO for DFW International Airport. “With nine new international destinations and the addition of service from QANTAS Airways, Virgin America and Spirit Airlines in the past year, DFW is continuing to grow and provide new opportunities for travel to the citizens ofDallas/Fort Worth.”

Passengers going to the Airport during the Thanksgiving Day travel period will be able to take advantage of a host of new initiatives and technologies available this year, as part of DFW’s continuing effort to enhance the customer experience. The new amenities include:

Microsoft Tag technology integrated into holiday signage, enabling passengers who scan a barcode with a smartphone camera to receive a special offer from nearby concessionaires

DFW’s Check-In Program offerings concessions discounts for passengers who “check in” via Foursquare or Facebook applications on their mobile devices

Over 1,000 new parking spaces available in the Express North parking facility

Eleven new interactive touch screens in Terminal D, to guide passengers to terminal concessions and service locations

DFW Airport’s newly updated mobile web site, www.dfwairport.com/m, featuring real-time parking availability information

Remote pre-pay system at Remote North and South Parking to allow consumers to pre-pay their parking bill and bypass the exit lines

Paradise 4 Paws, a new full-service “premier resort” for cats and dogs, where travelers can leave and retrieve their pets on a 24×7 basis

Once again, DFW is recommending that passengers arrive at least 90 minutes prior to their flight for domestic travel, and two hours prior to international flights to allow plenty of time for arriving at the Airport, parking, check-in, security screening and finding your way to your gate.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the holiday season, which by many, starts with a delicious dinner followed by a day of shopping. Unfortunately, an expensive Thanksgiving weekend means less money left over for the weeks ahead. Like most expenses, there are quite a few ways to keep costs down, and as usual, the most important one is to plan ahead.

“When thinking about holiday spending, most people typically fast-forward to December’s big budget busting holidays,” said Kim McGrigg, MMI’s personal finance blogger. “However, it pays to think thrifty all season long—starting with Thanksgiving. While a turkey alone might not tip your financial scale, the cost of entertaining and holiday travel can really add up.”

To help trim the fat from your Thanksgiving weekend budget, Money Management International (MMI), the nation’s largest nonprofit full service credit and debt counseling organization, offers a complete guide dedicated to a thrifty Thanksgiving. In addition to ideas on how to stretch your dinner and budget, Thrifty Thanksgiving covers:

Step-by-step instructions for decorating on a dime

Five ways to keep tradition and cost down

Tips for staying in the black on Black Friday

How to make the most of leftovers

Ways to incorporate “thanks” into your Thanksgiving

Thrifty Thanksgiving also offers a holiday checklist to help you organize your plans. After all, a little planning can help you enjoy a tasteful and thrifty Thanksgiving.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Most people are looking forward to the food, family gatherings and gift giving that comes along with the holiday season. Dr. Robin Gurwitch, a psychologist at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, reminds parents that this is also the time of year when they should pause to say thanks and also reinforce this idea in their children.

“The holiday season is a perfect time for parents to teach the quality of gratitude to their child,” says Dr. Gurwitch. And she says parents should start teaching that lesson early. “Children model adults in their lives. Gratitude does not come automatically. It takes time to develop and we as adults need to do things to encourage it and show it.”

In the midst of the hustle and bustle of Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa and all of the other celebrations, Dr. Gurwitch suggests the following tips on how to help a child understand the concepts of thankfulness during the holidays.

Model thankfulness to a child by using good manners and language and by asking other adults in the child’s life to do the same.

Remember to say “thank you” to people no matter how big or small their assistance to you.

Praise the child when he or she shows thankfulness. When we praise grateful behaviors, children are more likely to repeat them.

Encourage a child to help others. Explain to the child what you are doing when you contribute to a charity, collect food for the food-bank or perform other acts of giving. Use those situations to explain the needs of others to the child. Encourage young children to collect gently used toys or clothing and encourage older children to volunteer to help those in need. Consider doing this together!

Remember that being thankful is not only for holiday times. Consider other opportunities for the child to acknowledge people and things he is grateful for in his life. Examples of doing this include a parent encouraging their small child to list the toys and belongings that the child is thankful for.

Consider thank you notes. Having children write (or draw pictures) to say thank you for a gift or act of kindness is a simple way to help children develop gratitude.

For the fifth year, each of Best Friends 42 U.S. locations will host a special feast on Thanksgiving Day for family pets boarding over the holiday. The meal will feature freshly roasted slices of turkey atop turkey-and-rice dog food, trimmed with green beans and carrots. There’s a sweet potato biscuit for dessert.

“Pets are family members,” explains Renee Coughlin, VP of Marketing for Best Friends Pet Care. “If they were at home on Thanksgiving, they’d be sharing the holiday feast with their families. So, we decided that the dogs staying with us over the holiday should be able to celebrate with a special meal.”

The holiday fun kicks off Wednesday morning during drop-off, when clients arriving with their pets are greeted by the aroma of turkey slow-roasting in the lobby. Best Friends staffers don chef’s hats and leave no detail unattended as their special guests arrive. A few lucky dogs even get to taste test the meal that will be served on Thursday.

In the holiday spirit of sharing, boarders at Best Friends aren’t the only ones included in the Thanksgiving celebration. Each Best Friends location donates holiday meals to a local animal shelter so that homeless pets have the chance to enjoy a special treat, too.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

While celebrating the end of harvest season is a tradition that can be traced back for centuries, modern-day twists on the custom have evolved since the 1621 Plymouth Colony fall feast. Just as pilgrims rejoiced in their first good harvest, Americans today have found meaningful ways to honor the bounty, and express gratitude:

Give #foodthanks. Farmers long ago traded in their oxen for tractors and other technologies to raise nutritious, great-tasting food. This year, a group of farmers and ranchers is cultivating a social media campaign to initiate meaningful conversations about food with Americans on Twitter, Facebook, blogs and beyond, says Kansas farmer Darin Grimm of the AgChat Foundation.”For farmers on the go, social media is a great way to connect with consumers,” he says. “We’re hoping to see everyone from chefs to foodies to farmers using the #foodthanks hashtag.” Check out www.foodthanks.com, then tweet what you eat, using the #foodthanks hashtag, now throughThanksgiving.

Plan your meal with an app. New recipe and meal-planning applications are a bounty in their own right. Try the Thanksgiving Menu Maker from Fine Cooking, which allows you to “tap your way to a customized holiday menu,” offering more than 75 of the magazine’s all-time favorite Thanksgiving recipes, along with a shopping list and schedule.

Preserve the flavors of fall. Early American settlers would salivate over modern-day canning equipment. Once dismissed as a bygone art, canning has attracted a growing number of enthusiasts in recent years, according to the National Center for Home Food Preservation, which provides tips on canning, pickling, freezing and more. To really make a food statement, create your own labels at www.myownlabels.com.

Host your own tasting party. The holiday table inspires us to create treasured traditions at home, including exploring new foods in the company of friends and family. Home entertaining expert Domenica Marchetti suggests a trend-worthy twist on the wine and cheese tasting party. The author of Big Night In (Chronicle Books, 2008) says, “Embrace the season’s bounty and host an apple tasting party!”

Share in the bounty. Thanksgiving is a great time to talk with your family about helping others in need, whether it’s a family down the street or a hungry child on the other side of the world. Charitable organizations like Farmers Feeding the World and Heifer International believe that giving families a source of food, rather than short-term relief, is a more sustainable way to lift them out of poverty and hunger.

A group of farmers created the AgChat Foundation after connecting through the now highly visible “#AgChat” community on Twitter, a weekly moderated chat where agriculturists discuss various issues, tell their farm stories and identify ways to connect with people outside of agriculture.

The Foundation strives to educate and equip “agvocates” with the skill set needed to engage on Twitter, Facebook, blogs, YouTube, LinkedIn and other social media services, giving them the knowledge to unlock new tools to effectively tell their story.
