The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences presents the 1966 racing spectacular ‘Grand Prix’ as the third film in its series “The Last 70mm Film Festival” on Monday, July 23, at 7 p.m. at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The evening will also welcome Academy Award-winning actress Eva Marie Saint, who played love interest Louise Frederickson, and actress Evans Evans, widow of director John Frankenheimer, for an onstage discussion prior to the film.

The film won Academy Awards in all three of the categories in which it was nominated: Film Editing (Fredric Steinkamp, Henry Berman, Stewart Linder, Frank Santillo), Sound (Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studio Sound Department, Franklin E. Milton, sound director) and Sound Effects (Gordon Daniel).

The 70mm short ‘The March of Todd-AO’ (1959), a follow-up to ‘The Miracle of Todd-AO’, will also be screened before the film. This spectacular short follows the United States Navy Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean during the summer of 1958. The camera captures every moment of flight from takeoff from the aircraft carrier Essex to a flyover of Beirut. The film also includes a visit to the Brussels World’s Fair and scenes of Vatican City during the coronation of Pope John XXIII.

“The Last 70mm Film Festival,” continues on Mondays through August 13, showcasing 70mm classics from different genres as well as rarely screened 70mm short subjects. The remaining screenings in the series are:

July 30: ‘The Sound of Music’ (1965)

August 6: ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ (1968)

August 13: ‘Spartacus’ (1960)

Series passes and tickets for “The Last 70mm Film Festival” are now sold out. A standby line will form on the day of the event, and standby numbers will be assigned starting at approximately 5:30 p.m. Any available tickets will be distributed shortly before the program begins. Ticket holders should plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before the start of the event to ensure a seat in the theater.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present the 1959 animated classic ‘Sleeping Beauty’ as the second film in its series “The Last 70mm Film Festival” on Monday, July 16 at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. The film will be introduced by animator Andreas Deja (‘Winnie the Pooh’, ‘The Princess and the Frog’) and character designer Mike Giaimo (‘FernGully: The Last Rainforest’, ‘Pocahontas’).

Directed by Clyde Geronimi, ‘Sleeping Beauty’ earned an Academy Award nomination for Music – Scoring of a Musical Picture (George Bruns). It is the last fairy tale produced by Walt Disney (after his death, the studio did not return to the genre for feature-length films until 1989’s ‘The Little Mermaid’). It is also the first animated film in the Technirama widescreen process.

The 70mm short ‘Williamsburg: The Story of a Patriot’ (1957) will be screened before the feature at 7 p.m.. It has the distinction of being the longest-running motion picture in American film history, still running daily in VistaVision at the twin Patriot Theatres in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.

“The Last 70mm Film Festival,” a six-film series, will run Mondays through August 13, showcasing 70mm classics from different genres as well as rarely screened 70mm short subjects. The remaining screenings in the series are:

July 23: ‘Grand Prix’ (1966)

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Tom Sherak today unveiled the Academy’s new screening venue and announced its summer series, “Oscars Outdoors,” which will kick off on Friday, June 15 and run through Saturday, August 18. The open-air theater is part of the organization’s nearly 7.5 acre Academy Hollywood campus, which is also the site of the Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study, home to the Academy Film Archive, the Science and Technology Council and the Linwood Dunn Theater.

Concurrently, the Academy announced a slate of summer and fall 2012 public programs at its other theaters, including 50th anniversary celebrations of the James Bond franchise and the Oscar-winning epic “Lawrence of Arabia.”

The “Oscars Outdoors” series will devote every Friday night to classics and contemporary favorites aimed at adult audiences, and every Saturday night to family-friendly fare. The final Friday night presentation, on August 17, will be an “Audience Choice” selection, determined by fans who cast votes on www.oscars.org/outdoors. Most features will be preceded by surprise animated or live-action short subjects.

“We are very excited to expand on our innovative programming and provide the community with a new venue that will deepen our ties to Hollywood,” said Sherak. “The events we are planning for the rest of the year are an ideal way to share our love of movies with a wider audience.”

On Saturday, May 19, the Academy will inaugurate its new open-air venue with an invitation-only screening of 1989 Best Picture nominee “Field of Dreams.”

Demolition at the site began in July 2011. The space now features an expansive lawn and an adjacent 10,000-square foot plaza, and will include a permanent 40×20 foot screen. In addition to hosting the “Oscars Outdoors” screening series, the venue is expected to serve the Academy and the community as an event space for special screenings, educational programs and other functions.

The Academy will also host a busy schedule of events at its theaters in Los Angeles and New York as well as programs at venues in London, the San Francisco Bay area and Washington D.C. Summer-fall highlights include a centennial celebration of Universal Pictures, featuring a slate of the studio’s landmark horror films; “The Science of Superheroes;” and “The Last 70mm Film Festival,” which will span six genres over six weeks. An expanded summer and fall programming calendar is available at www.oscars.org/lineup.

“These are not just screenings, but events,” noted Randy Haberkamp, Managing Director, Programming, Education, and Preservation. “We’re bringing a diverse range of programs and experiences to audiences as only the Academy can.”
