The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

A leading discount travel site, released the March 2012 Hotwire Travel Savings Indicator, which features the top five cities in North America where hotel, air and car rental rates have dropped the most compared to this time last year.

“As we exit winter and temperatures begin to rise we’re seeing warm-weather locales like Southern California and Dallas offering great prices to entice travelers looking to get a head start on their spring vacations,” said Clem Bason, president of the Hotwire Group. “We’re also happy to report that one of the top value cities on our recently released 2012 Travel Value Index – Albuquerque – is proving its worth with big decreases in air and car rental prices this month.”

Atlantic City tops the hotel list this month with a 21% price drop. The beginning of the year tends to be slow for the Vegas of the East, so hotels always offer deeper discounts to fill their rooms. However this year, several new properties have been causing some stiff competition in the area, resulting in even lower rates.

In 2011 Dallas hosted the Super Bowl, causing hotel prices to skyrocket. This year, however, new hotels have increased the number of hotel rooms, driving down prices and putting the Dallas-Fort Worth area at second place with a 15 percent decrease.
Reno-Tahoe, Halifax and Washington, D.C., round out the list.

Last month Reno-Tahoe topped this list at first place, and although it drops to third in March with a 12 percent price drop, the city continues to be a deal market due to a weak winter demand. Halifax, Nova Scotia, makes its debut on the Travel Savings Indicator with a nine percent price drop.

Known as a beautiful leisure destination in Canada, the city is experiencing a slower tourist season than usual due to the cold winter weather. Washington DC makes a welcome return to round out the top five as the city is experiencing a lighter legislative calendar than last year, prompting less business travel and a dip in prices, especially during midweek.

Those in need of sunshine are in luck, because sunny Southern California is a deal market for airfare this month. Palm Springs tops the list with a 13% price drop and Los Angeles boasts an 11% decrease.

Chicago maintains its presence for the second consecutive month with a 13% decrease and an overall value city for 2012 as reflected in Hotwire’s Travel Value Index, Albuquerque saw an 11% decrease this month. Baltimore rounds out the top five air decreases with a seven percent price drop.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

The proposed Pebble Mine would siphon as much as 35 billion gallons of fresh water out of the headwaters of Bristol Bay, Alaska every year, eliminating critical salmon habitat. A new report, “Bristol Bay’s Wild Salmon Ecosystems and the Pebble Mine: Key Considerations for a Large-Scale Mine Proposal,” concludes the mine is too risky to be developed.

The report examines potential impacts of the proposed Pebble Mine on Bristol Bay’s wild salmon fishery – the world’s largest wild sockeye salmon run, with up to 40 million fish annually. Produced by the Wild Salmon Center and Trout Unlimited, the report details multiple concerns with excavating Pebble’s massive deposit of copper, gold, and molybdenum.

Examining a wide body of scientific information, the report says too much is at stake ecologically, economically, and culturally to risk development.

“In addition to risks posed by the chronic leaching of contaminants or a catastrophic failure, the proposed mine would substantially alter the region’s hydrology and salmon habitat,” said Guido Rahr, President of the Wild Salmon Center.

Approval of the mine and its infrastructure will likely spur a much larger mining district, substantially increasing odds that mining will harm Bristol Bay’s wild salmon, the report found. Pebble’s infrastructure would enable mining claims covering 793 square miles, an area 10 times larger than Washington D.C. The report also presents case studies of mining companies polluting surrounding waters and leaving expensive cleanup costs to American taxpayers.

Preliminary information presented by developers indicates that Pebble Mine:

Contains ore with a high likelihood of generating acid mine drainage, which is severely harmful to salmon and other aquatic species;

Will produce up to 10.8 billion tons of waste rock, requiring miles of tailings dams which could reach 740 feet high; and

Will construct multiple sources of contamination, including an open pit and underground mine, an 86-mile road and pipeline route, and a deep-water port.

“The Pebble Mine proposal dwarfs all of the existing mines put together in Alaska and would have devastating consequences for salmon, and the wildlife and humans who depend on them,” said Lance Trasky, retired Alaska Department of Fish and Game Regional Supervisor.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX) has captured the best and most complete glimpse yet of what lies beyond the solar system. The new measurements give clues about how and where our solar system formed, the forces that physically shape our solar system, and the history of other stars in the Milky Way.

The Earth-orbiting spacecraft observed four separate types of atoms including hydrogen, oxygen, neon and helium. These interstellar atoms are the byproducts of older stars, which spread across the galaxy and fill the vast space between stars. IBEX determined the distribution of these elements outside the solar system, which are flowing charged and neutral particles that blow through the galaxy, or the so-called interstellar wind.

“IBEX is a small Explorer mission and was built with a modest investment,” said Barbara Giles, director of the Heliophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “The science achievements though have been truly remarkable and are a testament to what can be accomplished when we give our nation’s scientists the freedom to innovate.”

In a series of science papers appearing in the Astrophysics Journal on Jan. 31, scientists report finding 74 oxygen atoms for every 20 neon atoms in the interstellar wind. In our own solar system, there are 111 oxygen atoms for every 20 neon atoms. This translates to more oxygen in any part of the solar system than in nearby interstellar space.

“Our solar system is different than the space right outside it, suggesting two possibilities,” says David McComas, IBEX principal investigator, at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. “Either the solar system evolved in a separate, more oxygen-rich part of the galaxy than where we currently reside, or a great deal of critical, life-giving oxygen lies trapped in interstellar dust grains or ices, unable to move freely throughout space.”

The new results hold clues about the history of material in the universe. While the big bang initially created hydrogen and helium, only the supernovae explosions at the end of a star’s life can spread the heavier elements of oxygen and neon through the galaxy. Knowing the amounts of elements in space may help scientists map how our galaxy evolved and changed over time.

Scientists want to understand the composition of the boundary region that separates the nearest reaches of our galaxy, called the local interstellar medium, from our heliosphere. The heliosphere acts as a protective bubble that shields our solar system from most of the dangerous galactic cosmic radiation that otherwise would enter the solar system from interstellar space.

IBEX measured the interstellar wind traveling at a slower speed than previously measured by the Ulysses spacecraft, and from a different direction. The improved measurements from IBEX show a 20 percent difference in how much pressure the interstellar wind exerts on our heliosphere.

“Measuring the pressure on our heliosphere from the material in the galaxy and from the magnetic fields out there will help determine the size and shape of our solar system as it travels through the galaxy,” says Eric Christian, IBEX mission scientist, at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

The IBEX spacecraft was launched in October 2008. Its science objective is to discover the nature of the interactions between the solar wind and the interstellar medium at the edge of our solar system.

The Southwest Research Institute developed and leads the IBEX mission with a team of national and international partners. The spacecraft is one of NASA’s series of low-cost, rapidly developed missions in the Small Explorers Program. Goddard manages the program for the agency’s Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recognized milk products as a key contributor of three of the four “shortfall nutrients” in the U.S. diet – calcium, potassium and vitamin D – and recommended adults and children increase consumption of fat-free and low-fat dairy products.

Parkland Elementary serves milk made by the Dean Foods Shenandoah’s Pride brand, including white milk, and fat-free TruMoo chocolate milk. Launched last year, TruMoo fat-free chocolate milk contains just 40 more calories than plain white milk per serving and is made without high fructose corn syrup. With only 130 calories per serving and 10 grams of added sugar, TruMoo delivers the same nine essential nutrients as white milk in a fat-free formula that conforms to the new USDA guidelines.

“Shenandoah’s Pride has been a strong partner with our school customers in developing a better-for-you chocolate milk formula with a taste kids love and the nutrition they need,” said Bill Hogan, Shenandoah’s Pride general manager.

In 2011, Fairfax County Public Schools in the Washington, D.C., suburbs gained national attention by reversing a chocolate milk ban to partner with Shenandoah’s Pride to bring a reformulated chocolate milk back into the cafeteria. The milk piloted with Fairfax schools became what is known today as TruMoo.

After successful regional retail and school pilots in the Northeast and Pacific Coast regions, virtually all of the flavored milk across Dean Foods’ family of regional brands converted to TruMoo in August 2011, making it one of the largest milk brands in the country by sales and by volume.

Tens of thousands of schools across the country converted to fat-free TruMoo at the start of the school year, meeting proposed USDA nutrition standards for school meals ahead of the finalized rules announced today.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Dr. Richard Merkin, President and CEO of Heritage Provider Network, has announced sponsoring the “Go Viral To Improve Health” prize competition with the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Engineering in Washington, DC.

“Go Viral To Improve Health” challenges undergraduate and graduate students to create innovative health-related apps, encouraging students to work in interdisciplinary teams and transform health data into mobile apps, online tools or games, or other innovative products that solve vexing health problems.

The team that designs the best product will receive a $10,000 prize sponsored by Heritage Provider Network and the opportunity to demonstrate their app during the plenary session of Health Datapalooza, the third Health Data Initiative Forum, June 5-6, Washington, D.C.

“I’m delighted to present this challenging opportunity to students,” said Dr. Merkin. “We need their creativity and input to help solve the country’s current healthcare crises. I’m more than happy to encourage their participation and ideas.”

This is the second prize competition Dr. Merkin is sponsoring in HPN’s ongoing efforts to spur innovations that improve quality and reduce inefficiencies in health care. The $3million Heritage Health Prize is the world’s largest predictive modeling contest, challenging entrants to create an algorithm that predicts how many days a patient will spend in the hospital.

The goal is to decrease the number of avoidable hospitalizations, saving the country $32 billion in avoidable hospitalization costs. Currently, the prize has over 10,000 entries from all over the world representing many different sectors, working together to solve the healthcare crises. The prize is larger than the Nobel Prize for Medicine and the Gates Health Prize.

“It is important to me to continue our efforts to motivate those who are interested in these types of competitions,” added Dr. Merkin. ” They are the ones who will develop new ideas that can help transform healthcare data into real, working solutions, improving healthcare and changing the world through healthcare delivery.”

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

On Martin Luther King Day, Catholic Charities USA and Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington honored Martin Luther King, Jr. by presenting awards to contemporary heroes working to keep his dream alive. This award recognizes them for their commitment to reducing poverty. Hundreds of people attended the third annual “Keep the Dream Alive” Mass & Awards ceremony, which took place at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Washington, D.C.

Rev. Larry Snyder, President of CCUSA, said, “I can think of no better way to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy than by honoring individuals who keep his dream alive through their advocacy and service to the poor.”

CCUSA presented “Keep the Dream Alive” awards to USDA Under Secretary, Kevin Concannon, Former D.C. Mayor, Anthony Williams, and former CCUSA Board Member, Janet Pape, for their advocacy and poverty reduction work. The Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington’s “Faith Does Justice” Award was presented to local television anchor Andrea Roane.

“While Dr. King’s inspiring life, built on the strength of his convictions and his sense of justice, made a tremendous difference to our nation, we know there is still much work to do,” said Msgr. John Enzler, President and CEO of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington. “However, as we remember Dr. King, there’s no better moment to look around and celebrate those among us who are carrying on his work in so many different ways today.”

Following the event, more than 50 individuals volunteered with women who reside at the Harriet Tubman Women’s Emergency Shelter in southeast D.C. Volunteers worked one-on-one with women on an art project designed to allow clients to express their dreams and what Dr. King means to them.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Emmy Award-winning TV, film and stage actor and arts advocate Alec Baldwin will deliver The Americans for the Arts 25th Annual Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts and Public Policy on April 16 at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. The lecture is presented by Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education, in partnership with Ovation, the only television network dedicated to all forms of artistic expression.

“Government support of the arts has been important to me for the past two decades, and Americans for the Arts has championed the cause for more than 50 years,” said Baldwin. “I am honored to deliver this year’s Nancy Hanks Lecture on behalf of Americans for the Arts and proud to stand alongside them as we work to underscore the positive economic and social impact the arts and arts education have on our country and our citizens.”

The Nancy Hanks Lecture is part of the annual Arts Advocacy Day events in Washington, D.C. on April 16and 17. Ovation CEO Charles Segars has been named Honorary Co-Chair of Arts Advocacy Day for the second consecutive year.

“The rapidly evolving global economy demands a dynamic and creative workforce. The arts and arts education help build the skill set to deliver such a workforce. It is imperative that we continue to support the arts and arts education both on the national and local levels and I’m honored to be working with AFTA to support that effort as co-chair of Arts Advocacy Day again this year,” said Segars.

“In these economic times, we have to make the case for the arts and be relentless about making that case. Alec Baldwin is a critical voice to deliver that message to a broad audience.” ”Alec Baldwin has been a stalwart supporter of our mission to ensure that ALL Americans have access to the arts and arts education,” said Robert L. Lynch president and CEO of Americans for the Arts.

“He understands the vital role the arts sector plays in building and sustaining our nation’s economy as well as the profound impact the arts have in creating and shaping America’s cultural identity. We are honored to have him deliver this year’s Nancy Hanks Lecture.” The Nancy Hanks Lecture is the leading national forum for arts policy, providing an opportunity for public discourse at the highest levels on the importance of arts and culture to our nation’s well-being.

The annual event is named for Nancy Hanks, former president of Americans for the Arts and chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts, who devoted 15 years of her professional life to bringing the arts to prominent national consciousness. Past lecturers include Robert Redford, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Wynton Marsalis,Kevin Spacey, Ken Burns, William Safire and Robert MacNeil.

Baldwin’s career has spanned more than three decades. He has appeared in more than 40 films, including “The Hunt for Red October,” “The Departed” and “Glengarry Glen Ross.” His work also includes stage and television roles, most notably his current role as Jack Donaghy on “30 Rock,” for which he has won two Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and five Screen Actors Guild Awards and his record-breaking 15 times hosting “Saturday Night Live.”

As a stalwart advocate for public policy and the arts, Baldwin currently serves on Americans for the Arts’ Artist Committee. He has also provided testimony before Congress on the essential role public funds play in promoting and sustaining the arts industry. Americans for the Arts extends special thanks to Ovation for its partnership in presenting the 25th Annual Nancy Hanks Lecture on Arts and Public Policy.

Americans for the Arts is the leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education in America. With offices in Washington, D.C. and New York City, it has a record of more than 50 years of service.

The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

Sunday marks the 10th anniversary of the most devastating terrorist attack on American soil in modern times. Countless ceremonies, gatherings and events will take place around the U.S. and world to honor approximately 3,000 people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.

On Sunday, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, and other city officials, will dedicate the newly built 9/11 Memorial at the site where the World Trade Center (WTC) towers once stood, according to American City & Country. “We had to design a memorial that would stand the test of time — and design the space that our city would need to grow and prosper,” Bloomberg said Tuesday at breakfast in Lower Manhattan sponsored by the Association for a Better New York. “I believe that history will record that we accomplished both.”

Bloomberg’s words are evidence of the perseverance that U.S. leaders and citizens have demonstrated in the years which followed the deadly events of 9/11.

On September 11, 2001, at 8:46 a.m., a hijacked American Airlines (AA) Flight 11 crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. A mere 17 minutes later, at 9:03 a.m., hijacked United Airlines (UA) Flight 175 crashed into the South Tower of the WTC. At 9:37 a.m., hijacked AA Flight 77 flew into the west wall of the Pentagon. At 10 a.m., the hijacked UA Flight 93 crashed into a field in Shaksville, Pennsylvania. The passengers and crew attempted to retake control of the plane which was believed to be traveling toward the White House.

According to The District of Columbia Website, a candlelight service will take place at the First Baptist Church in Washington, D.C. to honor the lives lost in the plane crash at the Pentagon.

President Obama and Vice President Biden will visit the crash site in Shaksville Sunday. Biden will later attend the dedication in New York. Obama will attend ceremonies in D.C., according to the New York Daily News.

Many will take a moment Sunday to remember the servicemen and servicewomen who lost their lives while responding to the terrorist attacks.

Police and firefighters in New York, and all around the U.S., are expected to observe a national Moment of Remembrance of the 9/11 attacks by sounding their police and firefighters sirens and bells, according to the Jackson County Times-Journal. At precisely 1 p.m EDT, bells will sound for a minute. Frank Lautenberg, U.S. Senator of New Jersey, encouraged the public to participate. “’This Moment of Remembrance’” will be a symbol of solidarity throughout the county and across the country. We must never forget what happened on that tragic day,” Lautenberg said.

Other individuals are sharing their perspectives and memories of 9/11 through a quieter, solitary activity – writing.

In post on the Foundry website, a Conservative policy news blog from the Heritage Foundation, Jessica Zuckerman reflects on how the events of 9/11 shaped the world for many young Americans. “I was barely a teenager on 9/11, but these memories will stay with me forever,” Zuckerman said. “For many in my generation, the events of September 11, 2001 shattered our naiveté and changed our perspective of the world. Coming of age in the War on Terror, we were defined by it.” Zuckerman said that after 9/11 her dreams of becoming a doctor or a teacher were replaced with an interest in the hot topic of homeland security and counterterrorism.

In an opinion piece written for the Washington Times, Gayle Lynn Falkenthal, of San Deigo, expressed outrage that the memorial for Flight 93, in Pennsylvania, has not been completed due to a lack of funding. “Flight 93 is an afterthought in the narrative of 9/11 and it shouldn’t be,” Falkenthal said.

Linda Paul, a guest columist for OregonLive, recalls her experience being inside the Pentagon when the airplane struck the building. “When the plane struck us, there was a single loud boom, more like a solid but muffled thud and the office shuddered, identical to the shudder of an earthquake,” Paul said. “I looked back to see the giant black cloud of smoke hovering over the building. I thought, ‘They’re killing us with our own damn airplanes.’ I may have said this aloud.”

Storytelling is a tool that many organizations are encouraging people to use in an effort to unite Americans and to honor the lives lost on 9/11.

The Washington Informer is inviting people to submit their stories of 9/11 along with photos to be added to the “Informer’s 9/11 Anniversary section.” One person who contributed to the Informer said, “That evening, I did nothing but watch television news and read the special edition of the Post. I knew that America would never be the same from then on.”

According to the Huffington Post, even the cooking community has come together to share their 9/11 experiences. The Food Republic interviewed 8 New York Chefs about that horrific morning. ”I remember while walking over the [Queensboro] Bridge, this one somber moment when someone, who clearly was from Ground Zero, covered in white dust, with a blank stare, was walking on the bridge,” said Bryan Voltaggio, chef at VOLT restaurant.

Similarly, StoryCorps, a nonprofit organization, “whose mission is to provide Americans…with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives,” dedicated space on their website for the oral telling of 9/11 stories. StoryCorps hopes to record one story for every life lost on 9/11.

“It was Christine’s first trip in an airplane,” Lee Hanson said during his recording for StoryCorp. He and his wife, Eunice Hanson, lost three family members on 9/11 – they were passengers on UA Flight 175.

According to Kirsti A. Dyer MD, a fellow of the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress, our stories can strengthen us. “Storytelling can be regarded as one of the oldest healing arts; it has been used for centuries as a universal, useful way for the grieving person to cope with loss” Dyer said. “Telling the story can provide the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of one’s experiences.”

Codi Schneider, a 7 year-old at the time of 9/11, remembers the towers crumbling on TV and his father predicting the Air Force would send him to war soon, the Associated Press said. Codi’s father, an Air Force Chief Master, served in Iraq and was responsible for disarming enemy booby traps. Now a teenager, Codi said the years since 9/11 have been full of nightmares. He often wakes up screaming in the middle of the night.

According to the AP, Codi said he doesn’t want to be in the Air Force like his father. He wants to be a filmmaker or maybe a journalist when he grows up. “Whatever I do when I’m older,” Codi said “I want to tell people my story.”

While ceremonies to remember 9/11 will be the focus of Sunday for many Americans, the U.S. Homeland Security Department will be on alert in light of recent terrorist threats.
