The Toonari Post - News, Powered by the People!

New York, U.S.A. — For the first time ever in New York Yankees history, Yankee Stadium will be transformed into a sea of red to encourage all New York Sports fans to join the fight against blood cancer. On Saturday, August 4, prior to the 1:05 PM start of the New York Yankees vs. Seattle Mariners game, red baseball caps will be distributed to spectators as they enter the stadium.

The New York Yankees have partnered with DKMS, the world’s largest bone marrow donor center, to support its mission of encouraging people to sign up as donors. With generous support from its founding corporate sponsor, leading global beauty company, Coty Inc., DKMS is committed to increasing the number of potential donors to facilitate both matches and potentially life-saving transplants. Fans at Yankee Stadium, as well as throughout the City, will be encouraged to “get swabbed” and sign up as potential bone marrow donors.

Blood cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, attack the very foundation of a healthy, functioning body by sabotaging the production of healthy blood cells. Oftentimes, the only effective treatment option is a bone marrow transplant from a matching donor – if a match is found, a life can be saved. However, six out of 10 patients who could potentially benefit from a transplant will never receive one. There is a 30% chance that a sibling is a match to a patient. For the other 70%, a match must be found from an unrelated donor, which is what makes it so imperative for as many people as possible to sign up on the donor registry.

The event hosted by the New York Yankees will take place Saturday, August 4 in the Yankee Stadium at 1:05 p.m. when the game against the Mariners begins; it will be a one of a kind event.
